“Trials Training Wales believes in a sustainable future for motorsport and our youngsters. Greenpeace UK states “…that an electric car has about half the climate impact over it’s lifetime compared to an average EU car today.” Therefore as a club we feel it is important that young people understand the impact of their activities on a sustainable future for us all. As part of this agenda, we only use electric bikes for our youngest riders. The club welcomes children from the age of four to experience this exciting and green form of motorsport Whether they continue with motorbike trialling into adulthood or just have some fun as children, it’s important that we demonstrate how it is still possible to partake in motorsport without damaging the climate for their future.”
History of Trials Training Wales:
Formed in the year 2000 by the WMF Development officer Bryan Puckett, with a lot of support from a band of enthusiastic volunteers and the clubs within the West South Wales Centre ACU, also with the support of Sport Wales Community Chest grant scheme to purchase equipment and coach development funding.
The aim of the club is to provide Trials instruction to youth riders from the age of 4 upwards, to try our great sport of Trials and to build their confidence and abilities – be it from complete beginners to clubman level. ALL ARE WELCOME.
In 2012 due to the popularity of children’s electric trials bikes, the Boys and Girls Trials Club was formed.

Motorcycle Trials(formerly “Observed Trials”) is now the pinnacle of off-road riding, as the riders tackle the most severe terrain capable of being conquered by two wheels. When someone looks at the obstacles before the riding starts, a frequent comment is a simple “No way!” A big plus for the spectators is that they can watch from just a few feet away as the riders attempt seemingly impossible obstacles.
Motorcycle Trials motorcycles are very specialised machines. Years of development have produced a lightweight, extremely well balanced machine with a powerful 2 or 4 stroke engines. The bikes have high ground clearance, minimal fuel capacity and no seat, creating a highly manoeuvrable, very lightweight, and razor thin motorcycle.
Who can ride Motorcycle Trials?
Basically anyone capable of managing a motorcycle can have a go at Trials. There are classes for all ages and abilities. Trials are a fun sport for the entire family!
What do I need to get started?
All you need to get started is a Trials bike, riding gear including a helmet, boots, gloves, along with riding pants and a jersey. Most Trials riders wear an open-face approved helmet however some will wear a full-face design for added protection.
You can begin to practice in your front yard or somewhere there is a small amount of dirt to ride with permission. Trials bikes are very quiet!
Another great suggestion to help you learn is to watch videos, read books on the basics of Trials. These are available from most dealers in the Uk.
If you decide to compete you will need to find a local Trials club in your area as they will have a schedule of events.
Will I need a special license to compete?
Most local events will require a club membership and some may also require an ACU license which can be purchased at most events.
The Auto Cycle Union (ACU) along with local clubs is the organizations responsible for holding local Trials events across the UK.
How much would I expect to pay to compete?
Most Trials event’s entry fees range between £15-£20 per rider depending on the event. If an ACU Trials Registration is required, they cost £10 per year. The ACU provides insurance and many other benefits for riders and clubs.
Where do I find a local Club?
You can find local club information on the ACU website www.acu.org.uk
Are the bikes expensive?
A new full size Trials bike will range in price between £5500.00–£7200.00. New youth models are between £999.00-£3600.00 depending on the size and features. Most new riders to the sport will start on a good used Trials bike as they can be purchased for much less and work as great starter bikes to hone your skills.
Do you offer bike hire?
Yes we do. Bike hire if needed is £15 (£20 for ages 12+).
Are they expensive to maintain?
Trials is one of the least expensive forms of motorsport on the planet. A few ponds for fuel, some basic periodic maintenance (clean air filter, change oil) and some annual maintenance (check suspension linkage bearings, coolant, brake fluid) and you’re pretty much done, a tyre should last you a good season. Most of the parts needed for your bike will be from falling over.
Where do I find the date of the next event?
You will first want to join your local club as they will provide a calendar of events in your area. Some events are only on Sundays while others will have an event on Saturday and Sunday.
I’ve seen people ride over huge obstacles – do I need to be able to do that?
Absolutely not! Those Expert riders are a very small percentage of the people who ride Trials – perhaps 5-10%. Most people are quite satisfied with the challenge of easier classes. All local Trials clubs events will have a class for every riding ability.
Will Trials help my other off-road riding skills?
Absolutely! Trials teaches you proper riding techniques including balance, body position, and many other key elements required in other forms of motorcycle riding. Many of today’s top riders have either competed in Trials or practice at home on a Trials bike. It makes a great “Second Bike”
Enjoy!
